Decks, Patios & Outdoor Living

Decks, patios & outdoor living in New Jersey.

Composite decks, screened porches, paver patios, walkways, and masonry across Morris, Sussex, Essex and Bergen counties. Carpentry and masonry under one contract — so the deck stair actually lands on the patio the way it was drawn.

Outdoor Living Contractor

Carpentry and masonry from one contractor — because the two always meet

Newpro Construction builds outdoor living space for New Jersey homeowners — decks, porches, patios, walkways, steps, retaining walls, and the masonry that ties them together. Most outdoor projects need both a carpenter and a mason, and we run both trades on one contract and one schedule.

The failures in outdoor work are almost always in the ground and at the house. Footings above frost depth heave in a New Jersey winter. A patio pitched back toward the foundation sends water into the basement. A ledger board bolted through siding without proper flashing rots the band joist behind it. We dig below frost, pitch away from the house, and flash every ledger — the parts nobody sees when the job is done.

Whether you want a simple composite deck off the back door, a screened porch you can use in October, a paver patio with a seating wall and fire pit, or a front walkway and steps rebuilt in bluestone, you get a written scope and a fixed price before we break ground — plus a permit set where the township requires one.

Outdoor project cost

What does a deck or patio cost in New Jersey?

Cost is driven by three things: square footage, the material you choose, and how much grading, drainage, or wall work the site needs first. These are the ranges we see across our service area — your written estimate replaces them with real numbers.

Scope of work

Timeline

How long does an outdoor project take?

Most outdoor projects are two to five weeks on site. The bigger variable is the front end — permits and, in spring, the calendar. Here is what to expect.

Before day 1

Design, permits & materials

Township permits for decks and porches run 3 to 6 weeks; pavers and decking are ordered here.

Week 1

Excavation & footings

Layout staked, demo of the old surface, footings dug below frost depth and inspected.

Weeks 1–2

Base or framing

Compacted stone base for hardscape, or framing, ledger flashing, and joists for a deck.

Weeks 2–4

Surface & masonry

Pavers or decking laid, then walls, steps, fire pit, and any veneer work.

Weeks 3–5

Rails, lighting & final

Railings, low-voltage lighting, polymeric sand, cleanup, and final inspection.

Common questions

Decks, patios & outdoor living FAQ

Most composite decks between 300 and 500 square feet run $22,000 to $50,000 installed, including code-compliant framing, railing, and stairs. Height off the ground, stair count, and railing type move the number most.
If the ground is close to your door height, a paver patio usually costs less and needs less maintenance. If you are more than a step or two above grade, a deck avoids the retaining walls and fill a patio would require.
Composite and PVC cost more up front and need no staining, which is why most of our clients choose them. Cedar is warmer underfoot and cheaper to install, but plan on re-staining every two to three years.
Decks and porches almost always require a permit, and zoning setbacks apply. Patios at grade sometimes do not, but many townships regulate impervious coverage — we confirm before design.
Below frost depth, which is generally 36 inches in our part of New Jersey. Shallow footings are the most common reason an older deck feels loose or has pulled away from the house.
Not when it is built right. We pitch the surface away from the house, keep the finished height below the siding line, and add drainage where the grade works against us.
Yes — segmental block and natural stone walls with proper base, drainage stone, and geogrid where the height requires it. Walls over four feet generally need engineering, which we coordinate.
Winter. Our spring and early summer calendar typically fills by February, and permits take three to six weeks before we can break ground.
